Yes, metformin does promote weight loss, but it is not a diet drug, it is an oral hypoglycaemic agent, and thus it is used for the treatment of Type II Diabetes. The buzz about metformin is the weight loss it causes in obese patients, thus it sensitises their body to insulin on more than one level, thus it it the first line of treatment in obese Type II diabetics. It has not been approved as a weight loss tool in people without Diabetes, so I wouldn't advise trying to get some without a prescription first! (and a valid reason for doing so)

Metformin hydrochloride improves glucose tolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes, lowering both basal and postprandial plasma glucose.
