What is the difference between "te amo" y "te quiero" I know that "te amo" is much more meaningful and only said between those that are romantically in love, correct? And "te quiero" can be said between friends and loved ones? My boyfriend of two months (whom I've been best friends with for a year) speaks Spanish and English and he will say "te amo" a lot. Someone told me that only husbands and wives say that and rarely at that. Is that true? Thanks for any help!

te amo = I love you
te quiero mucho = I want u so much.

English has really one word; I love you. Not so in Spanish where you are 'allowed' to stealthily escape a serious commitment.
Te Amo is literally, I love you. BUT,
Te Quiero mucho is also used plentiful, for the same expression. HOWEVER,
Te Quiero can also denote the way you speak about animals, cherished ones, appreciated ones....

They have the same meaning. However, 'Te amo' tends to express a stronger feeling. To be in love.
You can use 'te amo' for your boyfriend or girlfriend.
You can use 'te quiero' for all the people you appreciate, boyfriend, girlfriend, family members and even friends.

"Te amo" means 'I love you',which can be more/less sincere,but in Spain at least is more Dramatic as is usually an expression of Total Surrender.Passive.
But "Te quiero" is like 'I like you' or 'I want you'.It is more of sentiment of being fond of someone,something.Actively.
Loved and have been loved,in Spain.
Drama,Passion,Extreme Commitments,they give it All.

Te amo is used between those romantically in love , married or not.
Te quiero for everyody you like (your love, friends, family...)

te amo is used when you love somebody and te quiero means i love you but for a close friend

Even though for a non romatic relationship you would only use "te quiero", for a romantic one you can use both.
It is not true that "te amo" is only used between husbands and wives.
