I have an issue with the left TMJ. I was told by an oral surgeon that it's not TMJ disease but a bite problem. Basically I can't open my jaw all the way (like to bite a sandwich) unless i "unlock" it first. If I try to open my mouth without unlocking that joint first, my bottom jaw kinda gets stuck until i unlock it and then i can open my mouth. The OMFS guy told me to get a bite plate made which would realign my bottom bite and allow more room on the left side for my mouth to open. I wore it faithfully for about 12 hours per day for 9 months and all it did was in the morning allowed me to open my mouth, but as soon as I would eat something, my jaw would click and I'd be back to the locking and unlocking thing again. I'm only 23 and having this issue. Could orthodontics help this problem? Does it sound like this is a bite issue? He said it isn't a joint problem but could turn into one if I don't fix the bite. i now live in another state so can't f/u with the same guy. suggestions??

TMJ problems are hard to understand, challenging to treat and frustrating to live with. I'm a patient with TMJ problems, too, and coincidentally, a dentist. If the problem is caused by your bite, orthodontics may be part of the solution. But you need a general dentist to evaluate the problem, give you a diagnosis, and refer you if needed. Call your local dental society and ask them to help you find someone experienced with management of TMJ disorders. Choose carefully. Sadly, there are few who really know what they're doing in this area. To find your local dental society online, check the American Dental Association's website or the state dental association where you live. Or, you may be able to get the number by calling information. If it helps at all, you are not alone, and it's not uncommon for young people (especially women) to have TMJ problems. Hope you feel better soon.

7 years ago I've been involved in a car wreck and even since suffered with severe on and off facial and jaw pain. I've tried almost everything western medicine had to offer and had visited countless of specialist, had done ct scans, and therapies but to no avail. The doctors I have been to had persisted that there wasn't anything wrong with me and that almost drove me crazy as I was going through hell from this condition. According to all my symptoms I was diagnosed by a holistic doctor as having TMJ and he had recommended this book to me. After following the recommendation in the book for several weeks, it had changed my life. I got immediate relief after following the unique set of exercises in the book and after 2 weeks the jaw and face pain had completely gone. I only wish I would have ordered this program years ago. It would have saved me a lot of pain and anguish.

SOFTBALL,
THE CLICKING AND OR POPPING/LOCKING IS CAUSED WHEN THE ARTICULAR DISC OF THE TMJ IS IN THE WRONG POSITION. THIS IS A PROBLEM CAUSED BY ONE OF TWO REASONS:

1. BRUXISM OR NIGH TIME GRINDING
2. OCCLUSAL UNBALANCES BY YOUR BITE.
WHAT YO NEED TO DO IS FIND A DENTIST THAT SPECIALIZES IN TMJ PROBLEMS. HE CA MAKE YOU AN N.T.I. APPLIANCE TO ELIMINATE YOUR BRUXISM AND TMJ PROBLEMS. SEE THE INFO BELOW.
