VERY successful. Be sure to get a crown on your tooth (if it is a back tooth) to protect it, as root canal treated teeth become brittle and are more prone to breakage.

I have some patients who had root canal treatment on teeth done before I was BORN (1950) and they still have the teeth.

I have many, many who have teeth treated by my father before I joined the practice in 1976.

If I had to put a number on it, I'd say it is 99% successful with great longevity.

I also agree. Root canals are very successful most of the time. A tooth that has undergone a root canal can last the rest of your life and never need further endodontic treatment. However, in a few cases,a tooth may fail to heal. The tooth may become painful or diseased months or even years after successful treatment. Reasons could be new trauma, deep decay or a loose, cracked or broken filling.

If a root canal does fail, sometimes there is still hope in saving the tooth.Endodontic surgery is another option to look at. Although there are many surgical procedures that can be performed to save the tooth, the most common is called apicoectomy or root-end resection. This is done when inflammation or infection persists in the bony area around the end of your tooth after a root canal procedure.

There is no guaranty to anything.Nobody knows what your body will do to you next. But if you want a good job done, find a specialist(Endodontist) who uses the microscope, pay him a good money and he'll do everything to make you happy.I am a Registered Dental Assistant and I'll never see a general dentist for my Root canal again.

I AGREE WITH DR. SAM. I WOULD ADD THAT THE LITERATURE SAYS THAT ROOT CANAL THERAPY HAS A RECORD OF ABOUT 95% SUCCESS. THERE IS SOMETIMES NO TECHNICAL CAUSE FOR THE FAILURE OF THE OTHER 5%.
