To answer your question the National Guard is made up of volunteers just like the Army and Army Reserves.

I'm not sure I agree with your figures about 50% of the infantry battalions being National Guard but I could be wrong.

Yes it's all volunteers.

Imho, NG soldiers are generally more patriotic because they are doing it because they love their country and not for money. Alot (NOT ALL or nearly all) Active I've met in training and while at AT or what not have joined for money, to better their life for their family, or to get out of a craphole they were living in. I say again, this is NOT ALL or even close... but there are alot more than the guard or reserves.

I wouldn't be surprised if 50% were guard. There is 5,500 infantry soldiers alone in my state, 10,500 Guard soldiers. My state only has 2.5million people in it. (Arkansas)

There has been no Draft of Citizens since 1973. therefore, the National Guard is made up of VOLUNTEERS(as is the Regulars).

All armed service personnel including National Guard and reserves are volunteers. None are compulsory or drafted.

It is voluntary to sign up, but, once people sign up to enlist they can't quit or leave for a specified time. So if they don't like it, they can't just go home and quit. They have to stay until they are discharged.

I know one publicized case of the guy going to jail because he refused to go back to iraq when called to duty.

So it is voluntary to sign up but then once you do, it is compulsary that you stay and follow orders until you are officially discharged. You sign away any right to change your mind.

possibly they are 505 guard, but NO... it is not compulsory, it is and has always been 100% volenteer. the guard is under the State, not the federal gov, it is the decision of each govenor to send there troops, usually they comply because of prior agrments and funding etc. the reserves are federal, but that to is Volenteer, and always has been. regular Army is volenter and has been since mid 1970s, they use to have peace time draft, and war time drafts. but Guard has always been volenteer.
