The Orthodox church is the oldest. It was there at the beginning. In 1054 the Church of Rome broke away and started a new branch. If you want to see the way Christianity was practice in the East from the first few centuries visit an Orthodox church. First it is called a temple. It has an icon screen that seperates the part where the priest preform the rites of the mass, somewhat like the idea of the Holy of Holies that was in the Jewish temple. I suggest a good book on the theology of the Orthodox church called "The Orthodox Way, by Bishop Ware.

The biggest difference between them and Rome is that the priest can marry as long as they do it before ordination. They allow divorce. And have some more rational ideas about Mary than do the Roman Catholics. Communion is both bread and wine served with a little spoon. Really cool music.
