Serving in the military has never been a lucrative career, not even for officers until you reach command levels.

We serve out of civil duty and patriotism, not for good housing.

(Having said that, the US Navy has been replacing our 1960s and 70s housing over the last 10 years or so. Where I was stationed, they replaced everything and added housing for about 2000.)

You know, you should try buying a house and set up an alotment for it. By the time you get out of the navy, you'll have 20 years of equity built up. Tax laws have been changed so that when you move from assignment to assignment, you have to make a huge capital gain before you ever pay taxes on selling your house.

At sea you'll go in an Ensign's closet. It's about the size of a typical jail cell and you'll have one roommate. The officer's head will be down the passageway.

On shore duty you'll go in the BOQ with a small private room. You'll have a connecting bath you share with the room next door.

If it's like the AF, single and no kids = no housing. You will have a housing allotment to rent/buy, but nothing on base.
