it is a meditative prayer devotion that places you in a contemplative frame of mind
It's purpose is also to remember the mysteries the Joyful (annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Finding Jesus in the Temple), Sorrowful (Agony in the Garden, The Scourging at the pillar, Crown of thorns, Caryying the Cross, Crucifixion) Glorious (Resurrection, Ascension, Decesnsion of the Holy Spirit, Assumption and Coronation), the important mysteries of our faith.
We do not pray to it, it is a tool of counting off the prayers of the mysteries.
Edit: First Communion is the Sacrament of the Eucharist soemthign Jesus specifically commanded we do in rememberance of him. Eat of the bread and drink of the cup without it you will have no life in him. (read the account of the last supper). First Communion is the receiving of this sacrament. if you are raised Catholic it is usually done about at about 7 or 8 after you have gone through preparation classes to the imporatance and significance of it(if you are a convert you receive it with baptism).
We receive the sacrament of holy communion every week (some people everyday) but the first one is a special sacrament that is prepared for a celebration of joining in receiving the body and blood of Christ in rememberance of him.

The rosary is biblical. The Hail Mary Full of Grace which is verbablly stated on each bead if Elizabeth's greeting to Mary.
While we are saying the words we are meditating on various things in the life of Jesus and his mother. Among them, the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Agony in the Garden, Carrying the Cross, The Crucifixion, Resurrection, Holy Spirit coming to the Apostles (Mary was there)etc
The original definition of the word prayer was to ask, peitition. It only took on the definition of worship in later years. When we pray to Mary and the saints, we are asking them to pray for us.
It is like asking a good friend to pray for you.

I'm not Catholic but from what I know they do not pray to the rosary. They do what they call praying the rosary. It has to do with saying a prayer for every bead on the rosary until you have gone through the entire string of beads.

A lot of others answered your question very well, so I'll just ask you a question instead :D.
Jehovah's Witnesses believe that baptism is only symbolic, right? They believe that it does not wash away sin, correct? Please show this question to your mom and ask her to answer. Here's the question:
If baptism does not wash away sin, then why does the bible say it does? Read Acts 2: 38 "Peter (said) to them, "Repent and be baptized, 7 every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit."
This verse directly proves Jehovah's Witness teaching wrong. Not trying to be mean or upsetting, but it's the truth. Ask your mom.
God bless.

The rosary is a prayer that, although it is made up mostly of Hail Marys, is a prayer of meditation. While reciting the rosary, one is to meditate on different stages on the lives of Jesus and Mary. Meditation keeps us focused on God. So the purpose of the rosary is to help us stay focused on God.
God bless,

To meditate on the Life, Ministry, Passion & Glorification of Christ. And remembering Mary's role in giving Him to us, Nurturing Him, following Him, and standing under His cross when all had fled. She is a model Christian for us to imitate, and we memorialize her.
Also asking His Mother to pray for us, as she's closer to Him than our local friends -who of course we also ask to pray for us.

I am Catholic!
Jesus will never refuse his mother Mary. When we pray the rosary we are asking our Blessed Mother to intercede for us.
We are asking her to take our prayers, perfect them and place them before her Son. Its a very powerful and beautiful devotion.

(Matthew 6:7) [Jesus said] But when praying, do not say the same things over and over again, just as the people of the nations do, for they imagine they will get a hearing for their use of many words.
