At school, are students allowed to say "bless you" after someone sneezes?
I once had a teacher who gave another student a detention for saying it.
Was that unfair?

I definitely think it was unfair. When she handed her the detention slip, everyone was talking shocked and talking about it, with their mouths open. And it's a habit you know? So every time she said it, she got in trouble. she had to struggle not to say it.

I'm not lying [to the person who said that]. But thanks for saying that. I'm taking that you think it's unfair? Ok.

That teacher was in the wrong. The student that said "Bless you." was only being polite. This should have been questioned by the students parents because I know I would have questioned it if it were one of my Son's or grandchildren. I raised my children to be polite. And saying bless you is harmless.

Of course! However, we should also remember that our freedoms have nothing to do with whether or not people say we have them; ultimately the come from God. I plan on using my freedom to share Christ though all of America should tell me I can't.
Incidentally, most people don't really want a fair life; they want a convenient life. If everything were fair, you would always get punished for wrong, never get anything you didn't earn (including payraises) - in fact you would always get exactly what you had coming and not a thing more or less.

Saying "bless you" is in no way disallowed under the separation of church and state. There must be more to the story or the teacher was ignorant of the law.

That is unfair. Teachers have no right to punish for saying bless you.

Of course that was unfair. I'd like to hear your answer to that question too because I'm wondering why wouldn't you have an answer to that ? and would like to hear if you do.

Yes. The teacher went beyond their duties and job description. Wonder if there was more at play?

Yes many things/rights are not the same as used to be but there still is one called freedom of speech, use it properly.

Only unfair if it was done in a way that didn't distract, annoy or interrupt the class.

that's so stupid! of course it's unfair! bless you isn't even religious...the person could have been just wishing someone else well because the other person was showing signs of being sick or ill (sneezing)

The teacher was, of course, unfair.
Students are allowed to practice their religion as they see fit. They are protected by the constitution as much as anyone else.
