Does the driver get to choose what to listen to, or the passenger. I'm the passenger, just so you know.

The driver as they are the 'captain of the ship'. If the driver is distracted or annoyed by what others are listening to, then it could endanger the lives of all the car's occupants. Keep the driver happy & able to concentrate on driving.

Ok. I pondered this question. For a long, long time. I have an answer. The person driving should be able to request their choice of music. Why? It could help the driver, relax as they are driving. Etiquette, ask the driver if you can change the channel. If they say they don't care, then have at it. Etiquette, if its the drivers car that you are the passenger in, you never change the station without asking, DO YOU MIND IF I CHANGE THE CHANNEL OR SURF THE STATIONS A BIT. Remind yourself, you want to please the driver and keep them relaxed as possible. The driver has alot to deal with. Traffic and getting their passengers to their destination safely. Thats a bit of pressure. Keep the driver happy first, worry about yourself later. Thats not only etiquette thats fricking smart since your only the passenger.

The driver should be considerate of the other passengers and listen to something they can all agree on. If it is a long road trip, I think the driver gets to choose. We want the driver to be comfortable and enjoy the drive.

The driver gets to choose because it's his car. The passenger has no right.

If the driver is driving his car, or a car owned by a family member then be gets to pick. However if a passenger owns the car then he gets to pick. And if the driver is driving a friends car, but they are not in it then the driver gets to pick. Also if the car is rented then anyone can pick. This is a special case where it is first come first serve.

The driver. Sorry. As a passenger you can read, sleep, text, surf, whatever. As a driver you need to drive. I have driven enough long distances to know that there are certain CDs that help me be more alert and calm. If you and I don't like the same music and I'm trying to drive I don't need to listen to music I don't care for. At least it is annoying. At worst it is stressful and distracting.

The driver is the one doing the work and the one who has some tiny semblance of control over your safety. It might be frustrating or boring for you to listen to his or her music but, well, you can take a nap. The driver needs to feel comfortable in his or her environment so he or she doesn't drive the both of you into a semi or off a cliff. Bad music is hardly a huge sacrifice for not, ya know, dying.

I like my music loud. When I have a passenger I do try to pick CDs they might like (or, at least, hate less) and listen at a less loud volume but if it's a long trip I might need to listen to more energetic music than they'd like or have it be louder.

That said, as a passenger I'll listen to whatever music the driver prefers at whatever volume. It also annoys me to have to constantly turn up and down the volume to talk to a driver who likes it even louder than I. Still, I will do so, if they want to chat, because they are driving.

I'll even let my ears bleed to the sounds of country music or hip-hop if I'm not driving. If I am driving there's no way that crap will be played in my car (or whatever car I'm driving). I don't need to be avoiding that drunk idiot in the next lane while hating the sounds in my car. I can't control the drunk but I can change CDs so that I can deal with one less issue.

The driver gets to choose if family members
are with you
Otherwise if you and your friend or friends
all like the same music
than it is the passenger otherwise it is the driver and
owner of the car who chooses

Sorry, the driver. If I'm driving long distance, and the passengers have gone to sleep. At least , I have my music.I do try to have a music that they can still sleep and still keeps me awake. But, if my passenger can't share the driving,I will split the time of the trip and let them choose music they like also. Friends usually have mutual tastes in music, in-town driving it's my car,yet I like many types of music. the only time i lay down the rules,is when the music has "flammatory remarks", or vulgar lyrics.
