Boeing has seen the troubles that Airbus is having with that jumbo mess, I mean, jet and they do not want to go down that path. They are developing shorter distance planes that are more economical.

I doubt they'll come up with yet another 787 configuration with an additional 15% of passenger seating as an "answer", but the existing 787-9 configuration seems the closest fit to the ?eventual? arrival of the A350-1000.

Note to poster above -- the 787-9 is NOT a short range aircraft (the -3 is). Like the A350-1000 at ~8300nm range, the 787-9 has a range of (per Boeing) 8000~8500nm.

The 787 is not really a response the the A350 at all. It is a plane with new ideas they are putting together. Like it has more composite in its skin instead of aluminum. Which makes the plane lighter and stronger. The A350 is a response to the 747 in itself with more passenger seating than any airplane in the world. Boeing's original response was to make a version of the 747 that had more seating in it. You know that famous hump on the back of it? It was going to extend further back on the plane. Then Boeing took a survey of its customer base and found no market. So, they decided to just let Airbus take that niche of the market and go with something else. The 787.

From the timeline, the Airbus A350 series is a response TO Boeing's B777 and Dreamliner and if by any miracle, Airbus manages to meet its schedule the Dreamliner would have flown for atleast 6 years.

To make matters more interesting the A350 will have to compete with its brothers the A330 and A340. So there should be no worries for Boeing.

And the A350 is referred to as the "Band-Aid reaction to the Dreamliner"

Probably Boeing will built a more efficient B777 aircraft that is more fuel efficient than the current -200LR and 300ER because Boeing just mentioned that they may built a B787-10 but no words about the -11 serie. There is a Boeing thread in A.net saying the Boeing may do some work on its B777 in the future, so I believe the re-design of the future B777 may be the respond to the A350-1000. I doubt Boeing will need to respond to the A350, Airbus have had design problems with it for a long time and have lost potential customers to Boeings 787 program.

* but for the detail for their series, A350-X X series and Boeing extended series,..... must look into the news//internet ;)

The A350 is Air bus answer to the dream machine. I can't imagine they are able to beat that machine. It's the latest and greatest'
