our gifts of the spirit? Especially things like speaking in "tongues"? That we can't be saved if we don't have these gifts?

Remember that they have their reward in full (being seen by men). Jesus said if you make your alms, fast, and pray in secret, your Father that sees all done in private will reward you.

However, if one if given a message by God in tongues within the congregation, then he should not hold it within. And when he speaks, he should pray that one is moved to interpret.
God uses the special tongues in this way to give a message to His people.

Well I guess it might make that Christian feel more "holy" or special in God's eyes. Gifts of the spirit should bless others and glorify God not the person who has the gifts. I have never heard that if don't have spiritual gifts ( speaking in tongues) that you are not saved. Our salvation is through the belief that Jesus died for our sins. I hope this helps. I am definitely not a biblical scholar but that is my take on it... :)

Speaking in tongues is not an indication of a gift of the Spirit. Anyone can speak in tongues and not have the Spirit of God.

I guess it is misinterpretation, not reading both sides of a debate, spiritual immaturity. It is obvious that their are people in all denominations who are filled with God's spirit. Some speak in tongues and some don't. I do not think it is a matter of salvation, nor proof of true Christianity. It is a gift for some, and we should not turn it into an occasion for dispute.

Why do we do so many of the things we do... I use what I know of languages just because it's fun, and most of my friends know the same parts I know, so we use it from time to time just to. I don't show off my gifts. Yes, I have a thing or two I am arrogant about, but those are games that I am good at, and I am joking anyway. Needs fixed, yeah. I believe we just need to use our gifts for the betterment of humanity and promotion of God. But we can be saved with exactly what we have. God meets us where we are, then builds us to where we need to be. May the Stars light your path...

You are saved by you faith in Christ. Period, not by gifts or works. As for showing off, my 5 year old speaks in tongues. Do you think she shows off? She is totally oblivious to the fact. Speaking in tongues is a spiritual language. And further more anyone can be saved, they just need to have faith in Christ as their Savior. Do not misconstrue the truth.

Mormons don't normally 'show off' their spirituality, and I've never seen one taken up by 'speaking in tongues', Missionary Training Center notwithstanding.

Nor is the 'gift of prophecy' given to the lay membership; Brigham Young decided that was reserved just for the Presidency.

So, it appears your post is better stated as "Why do christians get to do all these cool things, and the One True Church members aren't allowed to?"

Even the "Power of Discernment" didn't work to well in the Mark Hoffman affair, did it?

if someone feels the need to "show off" gifts of the spirit then the "spirit" they have a gift from is not the spirit of the living GOD! because it is against the nature of GOD to "show off" that is called pride and pride cometh before a fall and a haughty spirit before destruction!

Showing off is part of the faked NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) method. It's the biggest NLP system in the world. Once you believe it's real, then you are hooked and they can make you do other things. Shame on them.

You cannot fail regardless. You don't need saved, you don't need anything. God loves you, always has, always will. He is already in you and do you think he would send part of himself in hell? I think not. Hell is but a conscious thought. Give and Accept love unconditionally and no hell shall ever exist.

Don't live in fear hun... you are being brain washed. FREE yourself and find your own truth.

I believe that all those who belong to God receive many different gifts- to be used to edify Christ's body of believers....Many do not know they have them & they don't know how to operate in them....The decision if people are saved or not is God's business, not a Christians ( not mine)
