Given the growing problem of binge drinking on campuses, do u think its time to drop the drinking age below 21?

Decriminalizing drinking by kids of 18 and older will bring their alcohol consumption out from hiding to where parents and adults can monitor it and teach responsibility without conflict.

Since an 18 year old can be mature enough to volunteer to serve and die for his country, I see no reason why they can't be expected to be mature enough to decide for themselves about how/when to drink alcohol. BUT, then the laws that say a parent is responsible for their children who are under 21 need to be eliminated. If the 18 year old wants the rights they need to shoulder ALL of the responsibilities that go along with it.

Guess what? It doesn't matter whether you buy liquor at the age of eighteen or at the age of twenty-one ... I can almost guarantee that you aren't going to bring your drinking out in the open in front of your parents. And just because you're legally buying it doesn't mean that your actions are going to be monitored by anyone -- least of all the bartender or liquor store clerk who is selling to you.

Lowering the drinking age isn't going to solve any problems. Maybe the answer lies somewhere in changing college campus policy about permitting alcohol in dorms and frat houses and enforcing strict consequences for disobeying -- maybe even making this an offense that will result in being expelled.

Problems like this should not be legislated. Cutting off the supply isn't explaining why these people are binge drinking. So why not create a peer counseling program at all colleges and then people might be able to open up about what is making them drink to forget. It might also bring people like the VA shooter into the light before they go too far.
