Your father handled the situation correctly. It is always best to avoid the appearance of tackiness just as we should avoid the appearance of wickedness.
With someone taking money from the plate onlookers would immediately suspect robbery in the pews.
We never have such a problem in the LDS Church because we pay our tithing privately to the bishopric by enclosing a personal check in a sealed envelope. "Passing the plate" in our worship services would be as foreign to us as someone in your church handing out change from a belt changer.

I have seen people take change from the collection plate when I visited Churches other than my own (we don't pass a collection plate).. it seemed ok to me...
Of course.. maybe some were just taking money out.. if they needed it.. perhaps that is OK too.

It Is tacky to take change out of the collection plate, if you have a $10 bill then tough it up and give it all up,just look at it as giving it to God, then it wont be that bad..I've never seen anyone take change out of the collection plate though..

Taking money out of the plate is less tacky than expecting payment for serving the Lord.

In my opinion, it is 'tacky' for a church to pass around a plate or a bucket. 'Tithing' was an institution of the Levitical Priesthood, anyway, and that ended with the advent of Christ.
Any giving to a church or ministry should be motivated by God in His Grace.
At our church we just have a plain wooden box in the church library, and we never, ever ask anyone for money.
And most importantly, God provides for that which glorifies Him, and a big public offering is meant to glorify man, not God.

No it is not ok. You need to plan what your gonna give and once the bill/coins are in the plate, it is very in-appropriate to take anything back out. Does not look good and you should not do that.

Be prepared, that is my advice.
I was told about the funeral where people had put some money to the coffin. One man started to collect the money and someone asked " You are not supposed to touch that money"..the man said " Well, I wrote a 1000 dollar check and I ony want to give 10 dollars and now I will take the difference as cash "

It's not that I think it is tacky. I would be more concerned that someone would miss the part of me putting it in then accuse me of stealing. Which is why it is best not to. Who can prove someone isn't really stealing.

Hmm, interesting. You know, when this bio chip technology is perfected, it will solve this problem. People can just wave their hands over the plate and whatever amount they're thinking of will be deposited electronically into the church.

It would be tacky to make change. If you give all you have you will be rewarded when you least expect it.
