I've found that the atheists that engage in this behavior (insulting Christians, degrading their intelligence etc) have no better argument or defense for their atheism.
And so they engage in mocking those who believe - because in many ways these people are a threat to them.
Also - they may have unresolved hostility towards Christianity. I'm sure they will claim they don't - but to repeatedly engage in the type of degrading behavior that they do shows that they cannot let go. I left Christianity years ago - I do not degrade Christians. I do not mock them. I do not get offended by them preaching. I am indifferent to them - or at most sorrowful because I believe they are wrong. Those that still have such anger have not truly embraced the atheist path they are so vocally proclaiming.
Feel sorry for them and move on. They are not worth your time or mine.

Do you know the story of how the Flying Spaghetti Monster came into existence? It was a response to a board of education's vote on whether or not to include intelligent design in public schools. Its meant to be as ridiculous as possible, just to prove that you can't condone the belief in one god without acknowledging the rest. Not in someplace like a public school, anyway.
Generally, I don't see many atheists using the FSM as a mockery unless they are responding to ridiculous questions. Especially the ones that get asked alot, like "What do you have to lose by just believing in god?" or "No one has proven that god doesn't exist, so why don't you just believe?" And the point is not to make a mockery of christianity, but to explain that this logic can be argued for ANYTHING ... even an invisible Flying Spaghetti Monster.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster was created as a means of mocking political doctrines espoused by Creationists. Creationists call themselves Christian, but based on their deceits, slanders, and outright lies, they don't do very well by your criteria either. The point of the FSM, is that it carries equal scientific merit to Intelligent Design as an "alternate theory". The FSM is no more a mockery of Christianity, or any other religion, than Creationism.

What does being a Christian have to do with being a good or bad person?
As far as I am concerned the same goes for all religions.
A Serial killer might have been brought up in the Christian religion as a child, but still ended up being bad.
I am sure that there are people who follow their religions (whatever it may be) and remain good people....and there are also people who despite their religion, end up being bad. Let's leave religion out of crime.
Your second paragraph sounds very much like preaching from a book. Religion is a private matter and does not need to be proclaimed by the lay-person for everyone to hear.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster isn't meant to mock just Christianity. It mocks all religions equally. One might just as well apply the idea of believing in the FSM to people who believe in Zeus, Allah, or the Great Juju at the Bottom of the Sea.

I've been preaching that for a while now, actually- but I usually target stupid or offensive questions... or ones that help me come up with a wisecrack.
BUT there's never gonna be any kind cooling off for this section- without the immature Christians telling everyone they're going to hell and the immature atheists making fun of them for it, it just wouldn't be that fun, now would it?
Simple as this- pick your friends from both sides and talk with them- they will treat you the way you want to be treated. While you're at it- use your contact list. That's what its there for.

First off, I am a Christian. I do, however, think that most of the athiests mockery and resentment come from most 'Christians'. Allow me to explain: 90% of people who claim to be Christian, are constantly slandering others simply because of their beliefs. That gets to people and make them throw insults back. I am so glad that you wrote this question because I know that you see many peopl eon here telling each other who is going to Hell, when that is not in our power to even come close to determining that. Those 'Christians' who lead condradictory lives are the ones who fuel the fire for hatred towards us.

It's not mockery - it's merely intended to prove a point. Atheists reason that all the same arguments Christians use to prove their God exists could be applied to any mythological creature. They just use the Flying Spaghetti Monster, since it happens to be a colorful example.
(Although, the FSM does pale in comparison to the Levitating Pasta Creature, which is superior in every way.)

It makes a point. Humorously, but still.
I know that many Christians are good people. No one's saying they aren't.
What problem do you have with someone come up with an idea that challenges the credibility of your faith? I mean, does it STOP you or anyone else from believing as you do? And if it does, perhaps you should wonder why.

Why do Christians think that their religion is above mocking? Are you scared of a lighter-than-air pasta being that everyone admits is fake?
