What is the difference between a digital and tympanic thermometer?

I can't find anything concrete anywhere .. I need help (and references please) to finish this assignment. I have checked all my textbooks & googled to no avail. No smart-alec answers please, this is a genuine question needing a genuine answer. Many thanks.

The difference is that the tympanic thermometer is an infrared radiation thermometer directed at the tympanic temperature capable of rapid assessment of accurate temperatures while digital could be used through other parts-oral,rectal,axillary and takes a little longer than the tympanic.
