Teeth do not fall out as a result of the normal aging process. The culprit is most likely periodontal disease that has been untreated. This tends to reveal itself in the older population simply because the condition has had a longer time to manifest. Periodontal disease is most commonly diagnosed in middle-aged people. The progression of the disease destroys the bone structure that holds the teeth in place. Once the foundation of the teeth has been compromised, teeth will begin to get loose, and eventually fall out.
So....losing your teeth is NOT a normal part of the aging process. People with good oral hygiene can keep their natural teeth for their entire lives. Especially now that people are living longer, it is even more important to take care of your teeth and keep your mouth healthy.

JEFFREY,
THIS IS A TRUE STORY. WHEN I WAS A DENTAL STUDENT I DID A ROTATION IN A NURSING HOME WHERE I MET MANY PATIENTS W/O TEETH.
THEN THERE WAS MABEL. SHE HAS IN HER MID 80's AND STILL HAD ALL HER OWN TEETH. I HAD TO ASK HER HOW SHE DID IT. I WAS TOLD AN AMAZING STORY. SHE SAID THAT WHEN SHE WAS A LITTLE GIRL SHE GOT SOMETHING STUCK BETWEEN HER TEETH BRUSHING COULDN'T REMOVE.
SHE WENT TO HER MOTHER'S SEWING BOX AND GOT SOME THREAD AND FLOSSED THE FOOD AWAY.
THIS WAS WHEN DENTISTS DIDN'T EVEN KNOW OR TEACH FLOSSING. FLOSS WASN'T YET INVENTED.
WHEN THEY CAME UP WITH NYLON FLOSS SHE CHANGED FROM THE THREAD TO THIS.
I HAD A HARD TIME BELIEVING HER SO I WENT HOME AND FLOSSED WITH THREAD. IT WORKS! BUT I LIKE MY FLOSS THOUGH.
SO, THEN THIS IS A TRUE STORY, AND TEETH ARE SUPPOSED TO LAST A LIFETIME-- WHEN CARED FOR.

They shouldn't be. I suppose as the body is wearing out the teeth in the gums begins to loosen and go, too, for some people. Those teeth work awfully hard our whole lives.

The same reason we get gray hair, age spots, loose muscle and in general start falling apart. Mostly it has to do a lot with our health, medications heredity and general lifestyle from birth. We have genes that tell us what we are going to do in the aging process also. I hate it . Don't you?
