Both loving, great, and terrible. God can be really loving, but he can also be very terrible. People who say that God is just some raging tyrant should temper that view with these scriptures:
Deut. 5: 10 shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me.
Deut. 7: 8 (Deut. 23: 5) because the Lord loved you.
Deut. 7: 13 he will love thee.
Deut. 10: 15 Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them.
Deut. 10: 18 He doth . . . loveth the stranger, in giving him food.
Ex. 20: 6 shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me.
Deut. 4: 31 Lord thy God is a merciful God.
You can't forget that the same God of the New Testament, Jesus Christ, is the God of the Old Testament. While God is merciful and loving He does not look upon sin with the least degree of allowance.

It's significant to understand that God was calling His people out of and away from paganism.
God has continually warned His people not to pollute His name by applying it to pagan worship (Ezek. 20:39). He has also warned about false ministers who validate these pagan practices: “Which think to cause My people to forget My name...as their fathers have forgotten My name for Baal” (Jer. 23:27).
Christ warned his disciples, “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name [Christ's name and authority], saying that I am Christ, and shall deceive many” (Matt. 24:4-5).
This system of Babylon still has a grip on the world through religion and economics!
Throughout the centuries, those whom God has called have had to face the pull of this world—and had to overcome it

He loved people the way a tyrant loves his minions. As long as people worshiped him and followed his odd list of laws he treated them well enough, but he was totally happy to kill off many innocent people to punish a some that displeased him.
Thank goodness these books are clearly just the myths of the Hebrews.

He is more involved and more violent. Basically the eye for an eye God.
He admits He is jealous and vengeful.
