When he's 30.

I am that age also and trust me, you absolutely MUST make sure he's reasonably mature before you let him. Actually, most kids start at around 10-11, but it's probably not what you think of as dating. People just sort of fool around and hang out with whoever the "like". Most attractive students of his school are probably involved! Maybe some will be bold enough to hold each other's hands or give a little kiss on the cheek. Sometimes they are the topic of many kids' conversations. Sometimes they break up with whoever in front of everyone. Sometimes people get refused and are "heartbroken". I'm sure your son knows about all that. I suppose you should let him. It's all pretty casual. Just make sure he stays courteous to everyone still, and doesn't get into the drama of it all. I know girls do. You should see some of my friends!

I would suggest 13 because then he will be a teenager not a child.Maybe if you explained to him that at age 13 he's turning into an adult which means taking on more adult responsibilties and being 12 he is really still a child so he should enjoy it while he can, because adulthood comes soon enough and usually lasts longer than childhood. I'm sure you will make the right decision whatever you choose.

Ok, I've answered questions like this in the past, and got some nasty IM's following the answer due to my opinion on this. I honestly know that I started dating at 14. My grades dropped, and looking back on it, I will never regret the person I was with, she was magnificent in every way, and I still love her 13 years later even though I haven't seen her in 10 years. I do regret having dated so young. Looking back I wish I would have waited a couple more years. Is it something you should get into an arguement with him about and put a wedge between the two of you, probably not... I would put stipulations on it though such as if the grades drop the dating stops.... It may seem mean, but he will thank you later. If you do this though, do not be the typical parent and say but not do. If you put your foot down and set limits, follow through with it.

Between 12 and 14.

Man, Americans are so close minded. No wonder there are so many college slayings there.

In real true wide awake life 12-13 y o's are seeing each other anyway. Let them be honest in front of you, that kind of understanding will really bond your parent/child relationship.

Instead of them sneaking down to the mall they'll be hanging out at home and you could get communication with her parents.

As long as the kids aren't hiding things and your boys gf is open to you about her home circumstances you'll have a happy healthy lil couple on your hands.

Now, whats so friggin difficult about that white middle class America ??????

I think its time for him to date now. if you are worried your son will do something dangerous like have sex, give him "the talk" if he handles maturely he is ready to date. Make sure that its not a serious date take them to the movies, you should see one too. Let him and his date stay in their movie alone and you go in your movie, that way when they are ready to leave you are there too. Thats all, then when he is 15 or so and he gets his permid he can do all the driving but he'll already have experience dating and will bee comfortable , you want him to be comfortable don't you.
