It depends a lot on why you're taking a break. Are you taking a break to explore other possibilities or because you're doubting the relationship? My boyfriend and I took a break this fall after being together for about a year and a half and it was really hard. I initiated it, because I thought I needed it for religious reasons. It was a REALLY tough two months, I can tell you that, very confusing as well. We both missed each other terribly and emotions were going every which way. At first it was hard not talking to each other, then we started talking to each other again and were confused on where we stood, because when we talked it felt like we were together again, but we weren't. We officially broke up for a week or so, then he came to visit me and that flew out the window because we didn't know how else to act around each other so we weren't broken up anymore, but we weren't together either. After a few more weeks I broke up with him again and for two weeks it seemed real that time, but I couldn't do it and we got back together for good after that and have been together since. I would think really really hard about why you two want to go on a break and what you see in your futures before deciding to try a break. I know my boyfriend and I were miserable for those two months and there were a lot of tears shed...quite a few. It was one heck of an emotional roller coaster. At the same time, though, I definitely feel a lot more committed now. I knew I loved him before, but now I realize the extent of that more....if that makes sense.

I don't know if it helps...I have never had one that worked...but it does give you a chance to breathe and think about the relationship and if it something that you want to give another chance.
