Some doves built a nest in our backyard in a hanging pot. My husband and I went out to see them, and we got to close - the dove sitting on the nest flew away. Has she abandoned the nest? (there are 3 very small chicks). I feel terrible. Will she come back?

yes she will come back, they are very loyal parents. You can still watch them just from a little farther away. You may want to put some cracked corn around on the ground.

She will come back, and so will her mate. Daddy doves are very good parents too. But keep your distance now.
[One year we discovered a mockingbird nest in our tree: when they were old enough for solid food, we would actually get a ladder and go feed them mealworms when the parents were away hunting! But not too often, we didn't want to upset the parents too much.]

Leave it alone. She'll come back. The old wives tale about human scent on the nest, nearby, or on the babies isn't true, so don't worry about that. Her maternal instinct supersedes that.

Yes, she will come back. They have to leave the babies sometimes to feed them, having people near probably just scared them off for a few minutes. Mama birds don't usually just leave the babies and never come back. Just don't touch the babies and leave the nest where it is and it should be fine.
