Social Security number is required even for voluntary work because you are exposed to danger and any accident must be anticipated so that you will have an insurance.

No it is not!

I have volunteered for years in many different types of volunteer work and have never been asked for my social security card. Who ever answered with the fact that it is needed for insurance reasons doesn't know what they are talking about. Social Security has nothing to do with insurance, only for paid employment. Do not give it to them give them a copy of your birth certificate instead. They probably need proof that you are a citizen and are able to prove so.
