If the owner has filed for bankruptcy and the court has a lien on the title, you will not be able to purchase it. A carfax report should show if the title has any liens. Also, the DMV will know. Don't give him any money until the DMV confirms that the title is clear.

either go to the federal courthouse website in your state and put in the owners name or go to a bankruptcy website and try there.. I do agree what does it matter if they filed bankruptcy once you title the vehicle that will be their problem with bankruptcy court system...

Do a title search........ If a bankruptcy was filed, chances are a lien might be on a newer vehicle. If there is no lien, the car should be free and clear.

Find out who the previous owner was. I think CarFax lists that, but I'm not sure. Once you have that information, then you can get a credit check to see if they've filed. You'll need help from there to check someone else's credit, but it's possible.
