Jackie, congratulations! First of all I want to say this..I was a mother of a bride last year. Gave her a private just close close friends of mine and hers. We did it here at my house in my den. We all had a blast! Don't worry about the negative comments you are getting, it's not really the place for the mother of the bride to give the party, but here's why I did it...and right or wrong, proper or not!
My daughter's church gave her a lovely cross legs at your ankles, hold your pinkie out shower. It was beautiful done, very elegant. My daughter was fine with it, and of course it was a very wonderful that the ladies gave it. Some of my closest friends and her's are not comfortable in a church setting for one reason or another. Some are gay, some have tattoos, we love them to death, but they don't own a dress! They would have felt out of place at the church, and won't attend. But they love my daughter and me. So, we had our own party!
The party was a come as you are. PJs, jeans, shorts, housecoat and slippers, and no make up required or wanted. We had all kinds of pig out foods at are bad for you but taste sinful! Chocolate, strawberry daqauris, white russians, and we played the music loud and laughed.
Each of the girls that were invited had gotten a questionaire to fill out. "What to do when your in-laws are acting like outlaws", "When the sports channel is more interesting then the bedroom", "What I would love to have know before the I do's" serious quesiton to..."How to say not tonight without hurting his feelings or him getting peeved and sleeping on the couch". All types fun, serious, crazy, and for future possible problems. "He forgot your birthday"
We just had a laid back easy night. My daughter told me afterwards, during the party was the first time since announcing the engagement that she had felt relaxed and not under the gun. It doesn't matter, Jackie, where you have the party, it's the who's there that matters. Remember you can have a better time somewhere familiar then some place that makes you uncomfortable or unsure of.
It's the people that make the party, not the place. Here's a few places that may help. Have a pool party even if it's at a hotel, karkoe night(did that for a close friend, a blast), Chili's or another resturant has rooms you can reserve. Do you have an amusement park near? A club that she like to go too. Go to a show, either a concert or see a comedian. Jerry Springer would be a hoot!
Jackie, you are doing this for your daughter out of love! You want her to relax and have fun. If it's not going to be a surprise for her, talk to her. You need to make her a fun basket for the honeymoon, will bring more smiles and laughs..fill up a basket with bubble baths, soaps, sponges, spray stratch(if you need to stiffen things up), red pepper(to spice things up) a rubber band-cotton balls-and 2 wooden sticks(just in case it gets sprained, vaseline, hand cuffs, funny gag naughty things, glow in the dark items. chocolate syrup. The possibilities are endless! Color bath foams are good too. A whip is a must too! You get the idea, you make it cute, or you can go x-rated with it. I did a pg 13 for my daughter. lol
Have the best time! Jackie it's an awesome feeling to help your baby girl get married. The feelings and yes, the heartache and the worriment is all worth it when she smiles at you after they announce her and her love, husband and wife.
God bless us all..............
ps, sorry! spell check wasn't working!

The best places are at a home since you don't have to worry about time restraints on places you've rented out for the bridal shower.
There are also amusement parks, regular parks, Dave and Busters, Hooters (don't laugh, we had a baby shower for two women there and THEY LOVED IT!), what area are you in to help us narrow down some ideas?

This is a hard one because we do not know where you live or what the weather is outside or what time of year you are going to have the shower. I think a fun place would be an amusement park, a place with water like a lake, ocean or pool, It could be hawaiian themed! Shell Leis etc. That is fun, You could all Limbo! You could do a costume party or something like that-- but with a theme like brides, or maybe a bad bridesmaid dress party! Something fun. :)

Depending on where you live... if you have a Bucca di Beppo near by it would make a great location! The staff is always so friendly. They have separate rooms to hold larger crowds. The food is served family style, so the bill is not as big as a traditional restaurant. You can buy wine by the 3 liter bottles for cheap.
Anyway.. that's my suggestion for places. Now, here's another thing you need to look into. My husband and I did our honeymoon registry online and it was so great. So while I am plugging the restaurant, I must plug the registry site.
Good luck and congratulations!

The most fun showers I have been to have been in someone's home. Relaxed, interesting, and tons of fun! Nice chance for female friends and family to gather with lots of love and laughter.

I would agree with the poster who said that the mom should not be giving the shower. I know that moms have started doing this lately, but the traditional rule was that that looked greedy. I still think that that is the case.
Could her aunt or a friend of yours give the shower?

First of all the mother should not be giving the shower...but if this is not the case it would be cool and adult to have a lobster roast on the beach. If the beach is not a possibility how about a pool party or a winery. All are great settings for enjoying the gathering of friends.

If you live in a metro area, call a local comedy club to see if they can accommodate a shower.
Or, you could do a "roast" and have all the bride's friends tell stories about her.

An amusement park like Six Flags or some theme based park...Might be rather pricey though.
If money is an issue, I suggest using someones backyard and having a non-traditional theme based shower - something she would love.
