How can I make the best of a small space?

My room is quite small and I have many things. How should I make my room look bigger, while making the best of the space?

Utilize shelving that goes up the wall, use decorator baskets for storage on them. Have your bed high enough off of the floor so that you can store under it.

If you can get a new bed, there is a Murphy bed that has a table on the bottom of it for use when it is up.

Nate Berkus from the Oprah show, bought a 500 square foot apartment in New York. He painted it all white, walls, floors and ceilings . This way the color changes did not shrink it.

Use light paint colors, and make the fourth wall a neutral color...this breaks the room up and makes it look larger. Use furniture that holds baskets, as these are attractive and hold a lot while keeping it at your fingertips. Use small pieces for furnishings, and make sure that they have a lot of interesting, and useful places for "stuff." Plastic bins for under the bed work well. Don't use heavy curtains. If you have a problem with too much light, have pull down blinds, but keep the curtains light. Do as much as you can to "hide" your clutter and any small space can look larger. Also, place a couple of mirrors on the walls...it's amazing how much this will help.
