Looking for dependability, gas mileage, maybe something decent looking. Anybody buy their car for a similar amount? If so, how's it working for you and what is it?

I would stick with olds cutlass....i have 2 of them now one with 125,000 miles and the other with 313,000 miles and i have never repaired the engines or transmissions on either of them and they both run just like new. one has a 3.3 liter and the other a 3.8 liter the 3.3 with 313,000 miles on it still gets 27 miles per gallon city and about 30 highway the 3.8 i have gets about 25 city. /

i bought a 92 f250 from a tow lot sale ( tow companies sell the cars that people don't or cant claim). if cost 1,600 i put another 500 into it. all in all it was a great deal. the only problem is there is no warranty but for the price you can not beat it. even if you put more money into fixing it you still end up with it for much less than a used car lot would sell it for. just make sure you know what you are looking at or bring along someone who does. my suggestion on type of car would be either Chevy or dodge because they will out last almost anything and are easy to fix. a good one is the dodge neon and they are usually pretty cheap. try to stay away from import cars because of the cost of fixing them and poor reliability. best of luck.

You want a Honda Civic. Affordable, decent gas mileage, and one of the highest reliability rates out there. Check out Consumer Reports car edition at your local library or book store for more information.

I say you should get a Honda Civic, because Honda is a dependable company, and the civic has great gas mileage, looks great(SOME years) (my opinion), and they will almost never break down if you take care of it. Also a Civic is very easy to tune. :)
