It all depends on where you live. Your best bet would be to call the humane society first. Then call a couple of vets. I know some states are huge and the ride to the humane society could be an hour, but it might be worth it, you never know.
Also ask some people which vet they use and why. Also ask if they don't recommend a vet and why. This is very useful information ....that could have saved my kitty :(
It will always be less to neuter a cat, than spay a female. It is much easier to snip than to remove all the female parts. Good luck and just call around
It is relatively cheap where I live $45-$80. I can also take advantage of the low cost programs offered through the city, I think that is $30.

Call your Local shelter and ask for suggestions they usually know of local low cost spay neuter programs or just call around to local vets the lowest I have seen a spay is around $45.00 $30.00 For a neuter But most vets charge way more then that.

Animal shelters can (in some areas) give you a voucher for around $50. Full price at a vets office will be around $100.
Males costs less than females because less surgery is involved.

it costs more if its a female...we recently got a kitten and for a female to get fixed and her front claws out it would have been $250, but since we had a boy cat, to get him fixed and his front claws out it only cost us $200---it will probably cost you less if are not getting declawed, also keep in mind if you have a shelter cat alot of shelters work with local vets to get you discounts on fixing and vaccinating
