I always liked Jack Dempsey until i found out he is a RACIST. A great fighter Kid Norfolk could have fought him and WON the Championship. And would probobly been a Hall of Fame inductee. But he is not because that RACIST B@STARD JACK DEMPSEY SAID "NO I ONLY FIGHT WHITES." Kid Norfolk made the great Harry Greb go blind in one eye. He had to be good. But JACK DEMPSEY SAID NO. I PRAY THAT HE IS BURNING IN HELL. While Kid Nofolk is laughin in heaven. FUGG JACK DEMPSEY!!!!!

Actually, Kid Norfolk would have gotten knocked out by Dempsey. Tommy Gibbons knocked him stiff and Dempsey beat Gibbons decisively. The kid was also flattened in 2 rounds by an aging, near-blind Sam Langford and again by Harry Wills in 2, so his record against fellow punchers is not the best.

I have films of Dempsey and I have a film of Norfolk vs. Big Bill Tate. The Kid is impressive. Very fast and strong. But he tended to crouch and leap out at opponents, throwing roundhouse shots. He would be wide open for a fighter like Dempsey. Sam Langford called Dempsey "The greatest fighter I have ever seen". That's from a man who easily KO'd Norfolk, so it carries weight.

Dempsey's reluctance to fight blacks had more to do with Tex Rickard than any personal hatreds. Tex promoted the Johnson/Jeffries fight, which caused race riots in which both blacks and whites were murdered. Afterwards he said he would never pit a black and a white against each other in a fight again. Can you blame him? The guilt of having all those deaths on his hands must have been awful.

Sounds like you got a lot of hatred built up. Must be exhausting.

And by the way, Norfolk blinded Greb by thumbing him. Hardly an indicator of greatness or a cause for congratulation.

Racist or not, Jack Dempsey was a great boxer who brought excitement to the sport during its early years. He was to the 1920's what Mike Tyson was in the 80's.

great answer Elmer and thumbs up for that. although, i might in simple terms upload that James J. Jeffries did combat from a crouch and James J. Corbett did use the area tactic to sidestep being hit. in all probability Jack Dempsey is so cherished because of fact he grew to become into champ in the process the roaring 20's, whilst each little thing appeared greater suitable than existence, and for a manner he lost the call in his 2 fights with Tunney, fairly their 2nd combat, the conflict of the long count quantity. interior the early area of his reign Dempsey grew to become into actually unpopular and grew to become into called each little thing from a "cheesecake" champion to a draft dodger.

I agree with Douglas. If you want to know racism in athletics do a little more research before you ask a question.
