Genesis actually describes it in 1:6,7,8

God said, "Let there be a vault in the waters to divide the waters in two." And so it was. God made the vault and it divided the waters above the vault from the waters under the vault. God called the vault "heaven". Evening came and morning came: the second day.

Footnote on the word "vault": "For the ancient Semites, the arch or vault of the sky was a solid dome holding the upper waters in check."

That's straight from The Jerusalem Bible~

Sounds to me like heaven is being described as the Earth's atmosphere which would mean that heaven is actually here on Earth. I like that idea.

There is pretty much a reference to heaven in every book in the new testament. Jesus refers to it also and told many parables about it. He referred to it as where his Father lives and where he came from (John 6:38) and He referred to it as the place where he is preparing a place for us. ( john 14:3) so we can live with Him forever. Hope that helps.
