...believing that a book is true because it says it is, even though it was written by people thousands of years ago who believed the world was flat and lacked the knowledge of the world we have today?

Well, nikola. I don't think that anyone NEEDS something false to believe in (believe as in faith). Look at the world around you. If there is no God then this is it. We should take care of this world and make it safe for the next generation.
This is impeded when people start thinking that animals were "made" to serve man, and that the rapture is coming soon so this world doesn't matter.
If you want something to believe in, believe in yourself.

Jeancommunicates, do you think a oerfect being who created the world would tell people it was flat? Wtf?
We are "smart" because of our own abilities. Religion has been against science at every corner. See also: Galileo; Darwin

yes, religion inherently impedes progress.

and this progress you speak of is something i call "societal evolution"

look at the stem cell debate. we need to use stem cells to progress medical science. but were impeded (the opposite of progress) by those who are religious because their magic little book says that all life is sacred.

amusingly these are the same people who think giving a deer a head shot from 50 yards away is a good thing.

The book isn't about geophysics. It is about man's relationship with God, written largely by people who had the opportunity to meet God personally, and to be taught directly by Him. Who could write more authoritatively than these authors??

God dictated the words. They just wrote it down. Why do you think that we are so intelligent today? What makes you think that?
