In a word? NO
some people, me being one of them, like to remember people the way they were. and to others attending funerals is just to devistating. so i believe it needs to be a personal choice. seems to be some disfunction in that family and his reasons are real only he will know.
funerals are not for show or pitty, that feeling should come from within. and how and where you decide to deal with it should be your own choice. i dont believe he is the one with the problem, they are.
my uncle just died, we have a HUGE family and i was one of three people that didnt make it. My choice was my own and when confronted i simply said, you have no clue how i feel, i dont want to discuss it. that was that.
good luck to all, and know that death is a certainty in life, we each have our own feelings. if his choice was being another place, they should have understood.
he has his own family to worry about now. if his family is that selfish that he "choose" to be in the wrong place, that is thier problem, not his..
good luck!

It well but then she finally agreed on going up there for a second and saying goodbye i am not saying he has to do tht but if he went it would be nice but make sure he is alright when he goes..........And maybe the daughter shouldnt go if she is threatned her life or to get hurt

He is not really bad. People handle death in thier own way. His was to remember his mother the way she was. He did at least go see her before she died. I just hope that someday he does not regret not going to the funeral. His sister however was wrong to threaten the little girl just because she does not like the mother.

No. Everybody deals with the death of a parent differently. It sounds like his family is comprised of *******, so that's just a little extra motivation for him to stay away - possibly he can wash his hands of them for good. His mother will be dead - it's not likely she'll care very much one way or the other.

He is NOT a bad person. He needs to go to the funeral however, because not doing so he is trying to escape the fact that she is dead. He needs to confront it. As for his family.... let him be thankful he lives far away

Its true, he may of seen the best of her when she was alive, doesnt mean he wants to see her when she is dead. The family sounds f@#$ed up so I dont blame him for wanting to skip out on that.
So no he isnt

Nope - he is not a bad person. He paid his respects already, and it's not unusual to dislike funerals.
