it has nothing to do with the stereotype- it is because the beliefs of the church are based on a lie.
The practices and beliefs of the LDS or Mormon church are inconsistant with the Word of God and the book they declare as the continuation of God's word is a complete fabrication sprouted from the imagination of a very creative but very misled individual.

Having been LDS, I know what the church believes. I've been really studying the Bible a lot lately. I can tell you that I don't like how the doctrines of the church go against the Bible. The LDS pick and choose what they believe in the Bible, they don't believe all of it. If it sounds like it backs up what Joseph Smith said then it's scripture, if not then it's not translated correctly. If the LDS church would become a Bible believing church I would go back. I know that they won't. To do that they would have to admit their prophets were wrong.
I don't think much of Ed Decker either.

Well, I am hardly an expert, but many of the teachings of the LDS church contradict most mainstream Christian teachings. The existence of a newer testament (the book of Mormon) is blasphemous to some. The "You can be come a god yourself" teachings and the secret handshakes that get you into heaven really tweak some people. The teachings that women are servants to their husbands and are not good for much more than having TONS of kids and need the huspand's permission to go to heaven are unpopular. Plus, the super straight laced clean cut persona that many Mormons portray strikes many people as false. Oh what else, let's see. They did not let black people in until a few decades ago (they thought they were evil). Don't forget polygamy. I know the LDS church forbids it, but there are still a bunch who do it. The are secretive and won't let non-mormons into the temple. Magic underwear. Kids going to seminary 5 or 6 days a week from the time they are 4 or 5. There is also the appearance of having stolen their rituals and such from the Masons. I am sure there is more.
There is a bunch of good things about Mormons too, but you didn't ask.

I guess it comes from the claim of the LDs church being the own true church and how Joseph Smith has done much more for any one man save Jesus Christ. That is a big and arrogant call to make, and it is insulting to think that Joseph Smith was anything like Jesus Christ. He has done nothing special, except con a lot of otherwise smart people into following a ridulous doctrine.
Murders carried out by church members regardless of what sect of mormonism they belong to are still murders carried out under the doctrine of blood atonement that still is part of the church today, unless you want to disown Brigham Young?

Everyone has different beliefs so that's probably why. I don't mind that so many dislike the church, even though i'm a member.
And by the way, that crazy guy who killed those people actually has nothing to do with the true LDS church. He of the reorganized church. The RLDS church is a distorted version of the Mormon church.
So if two men with white shirts and black badges come to your door, you can trust them....the're nice and they have something really great to say to you : )

People in my community dislike and distrust the LDS church because of some murders that took place about 15 year ago or so by members, against other members. If you want more information, read this.
http://www.crimelibrary.com/notorious_murders/mass/lundgren/index_1.html
I am not generalizing in any way, FYI. Its just that I live in a very safe place. These things dont really happen often. In fact, this is really the only murders I an think of at all.
For the record, I am not saying I dislike any of you. I dislike this guy in particular....

The Mormon religion was founded less than two hundred years ago by a man named Joseph Smith. He claimed to have received a personal visit from God the Father and Jesus Christ and told that all churches and their creeds were an abomination. Joseph set out to impose a brand-new religion that claims to be the “only true church on earth.” The problem with Mormonism is that it contradicts, modifies, and expands on the Bible. Christians have no reason to believe that the Bible is not true and adequate. To truly believe in and trust God means to believe in His Word. And all Scripture is inspired by God, which means it comes from Him (2 Timothy 3:16).
Although Mormons are usually friendly, loving, and kind people - they are involved in a false religion that distorts the nature of God, the Person of Jesus Christ, and the means of salvation.

If people don't like it when missionaries come to their door, then they can just politely ask them to leave. I'm not sure what is so difficult about that.
Anyways, I'm not sure either. I've had people tell me what I am, and where I'm going, and judge me just for what I believe in. I'd never do that to them. I'm not sure why people have to be like that to me and to my fellow LDS. I've been taught to respect everyone's beliefs.
As human beings, we aren't the ones to judge who is going to Heaven and who isn't.

Because some people leave the church, but can't leave it alone. People like Ed Decker publish books lke his "The Godmakers" which makes what we believe look sordid and evil. People actually think we believe that drek.

There's a stereotype that all LDS people are polygamists. Also, mormons go door to door. People hate when solicitors come to their door.
