Just tuning in to my own breathing seems to be the most effective for me.....Sometimes visualizing an ocean surf, and matching my breath to the waves... Sometimes I will focus on a mantra.....
One web site that I have had in my bookmarks for years, that features a different meditation every week, and a thought for the day, is http://www.interluderetreat.com I think you might like it, if you haven't seen it before...

When I was heavily into it, Zen Buddhist meditation was very powerful. For that you must have a proper teacher. My teacher was a Zen Buddhist monk.
For chanting I hve found that the chanting of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo different yet also very powerful practice.
Both pushed me to evolve in profound ways I am more myself than I was for having these teachers.
A more obscure form was passed on to me regarding healing. This to was a contribution I value dearly.
Peace and enlightenment.

I'm a computer geek, so I'm obviously going to use a geeky form of meditation. Binaural beats are really awesome. Who needs mantras when you can let a sound generator and a pair of headphones do the work for you?

There seems to be two types of answerers. I will answer in both manners.
Analytical Meditation
Listening to the Jazz Trumpet or Classical Piano or Strings over a nice drink (usually iced-water), in a well-lit and neat room.
I like to emotionally connect to what the musician is expressing. I don't like to use lyrical songs, because they are very inhibiting.
I generally use Chopin.
The former is offensive the latter defensive. It all depend on what I'm going for.

This depends on you, your energy system, your present state and may change from time to time. Just translate "meditation" into "medication" and you see the point immediately.
If you don't have or want a meditation teacher to advise you, follow your feeling.

Racing my motorcycle.
Some think Im crazy when I say that - but it really is a form of meditation. You cannot concentrate on ANYTHING other than the task at hand. So, it clears one's mind of the daily trash/issues/problems we face. Rather than sitting closed eyed repeating "OM" over and over, Im going balls out around a race track - repeating the same movements/controls over and over.

Watching the waves of the ocean crash against the shore is rivalled only by watching the eagles soar in the strong south easterly winds. Both sooth and serve to reunite me with oneness.
