Anything he might like to snack on...sardines are healthy, veggie thins crackers...what are his favorites? Is he a reader? You could send a book or books. If he has a personal size DVD player maybe a movie. Does he have slippers? Sometimes the berthing compartment floors are cold, maybe he could use a set of slippers...we used to play cards for hours in the berthing area...maybe a new deck of cards? Whatever you send will be right, your thoughtfulness will be much appreciated. Getting mail is a really big deal for sailors. Hope this helps Denise :)

Photos, magazines, and newspaper clippings from home.
Homemade cookies, brownies, or other things that ship well are probably about the most prized.
Local-brand snacks, chips, jerky, sauces/seasonings, etc.
Various single-serving hot and cold beverage powders and soup/noodle mixes. (I got SO tired of drinking coffee all the time.)
If you want, you can check out this web site that sells lots of single-serving items and care packages: http://www.minimus.biz/.
On a ship, you can pretty much get most things in the way of generic food and snacks, and plenty of fresh-cooked food round the clock, which is why the homemade stuff or non-national brand stuff is pretty cool. Basically, your sailor far away is missing home.

Most personal care item are available at the ship's exchange. I'm sure magazines, home made cookies, candy and such would be much appreciated. And if you have access to it. Letters from school kids were always a big hit when I was serving

Something very small. Treats are nice...something non-perishable.
When I was in the Navy, I just appreciated getting letters.
A teddy bear or something works too (yes, even if it's a guy)...unless you are also a guy...that would be a little strange!
Letters, pictures, hometown news...all that stuff is good.
