I remember an ad on TV years ago about a gel paint that wouldn't drip, and it seemed really smart because painting is SO messy

Yes.

Though they call it "High solid" paint.

"High-solid" paint is as color specially mixed that increases the concentration of paint pigments mixed in with clear binders and other chemical elements. This color usually requires only a coat or two for full coverage, and is specially formulated to adhere to the underlying primer/sealer and to adhere also to the clear top coats. A "high-solid" color is a technical term and cannot be created except by an experienced paint technician.

Paints are not created equal. HD sells "Bare" brand, because, after you paint it on, you can still see the old color. The absolute best paint I've ever used is a brand called, Pratt and Lambert. It is expensive, but wonderful. They have, for example an interior flat latex wall paint that is scrubbable. You probably have not heard of them, but they are popular in public buildings. Their ads used to say that they were used in the White House, as I recall. Their paints cover well, far better than anyone else's. Talk to the salesman at the paint store. The stuff is so thick, that it takes some getting used to. Once you've used it, you'll never be happy with anything else. good luck.
