Hey Keir,

There are too many Trebes in the USA for ZABASEARCH to list them. So, you can use the advanced feature and search state by state, and down to city and town. These would be phone listings of living Trebes.

Family Search by LDS has a number of German entries, one from an area called Sashen as follows:

Gottfried TREBES (AFN: HHGM-N2) Pedigree
Sex: M Family
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Event(s):
Birth: 6 Oct 1677
Breitingen, Sashsen
Death: 10 Dec 1761
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parents:
Father: Elias TREBSS (AFN: HHGM-H6)

So, there are plenty of people that share your surname, and it could be German. Sometimes names originate from different locations.

Just a clarification... surname is your last name (family name), and "2nd name" (to me) is your middle name.
You could consider following a very common practice in early America... using your mother's maiden name as your middle name. (Hint, people... when you see unusual middle names, it is very possible to have been passed down from a female ancestor).
As for Trebes being German, it might be from Germany, but it always is wise to locate your actual immigrant ancestor and verify where he came from. You may be surprised. And my personal thought is that I PREFER less common names, so not sure why you would change it.

No. My surname is Williams -the only link that I have with my father - and I wanted to change it to Knight actually.
