Although you've only got 4 days I'd really try and see a bit of both. You could spend a couple of days in the Lakes then a quick drive down the M6 (freeway) to Liverpool and the ferry across to Ireland.

The Lake District has beautiful scenery but you need nice weather to see it - often it's not nice weather. The Irish are the most friendly and hospitable people you could imagine and Ireland too is blessed with some wonderful scenery.

If the forecast is bad then skip the Lakes and just do Ireland, if the forecast is good try and do them both. You can do the driving and ferry crossing by night so you won't miss anything.

if you only have 4 days, the Lake District may make more sense. You can't see much of Ireland (wonderful as it is) in 4 days.

I love Ireland but have also been to the Lake District and it is absolutley stunning there - if I was given the choice of both locations I would be hard pushed to choose. It is definitely worth the trip

I've been to the Lake District and yes it is beautiful but the weather needs to be good.
I would highly recommend Ireland especially around the Lakes of Killarney (south/west) and also around the North coastline/Giants Causeway. The scenery is stunning and you won't be disappointed. The people are very friendly and you will be made to feel most welcome and there is plenty to do and see.

Are you kidding? The lakes are one of the most beautiful places in the UK. Keswick is the best.
