It was suggested that by betting 1$ on red (or black) and if you lost, bet $2 on the same colour, and if you lost again bet $4, until you eventually hit your colour you would win back your orginal stake + a profit equal to that of your original stake. Is this possible and if so is it illegal in casinos?

There is something in these answers coming into you that do not recognize your original question. Is it possible to win consistently at Roulette? Being a roulette dealer, I can tell you what I see as being the best or most consistent way of winning. It isn't black or red...I had a man do that...I spun twelve consecutive black when the man was betting red. On the 2:1 bets, either dozens or columns. You are allowed to bet in all three spaces...but if you bet two of those places and one of them hits you get your other bet back plus, another even amount, making at least $5 per spin (the casino I work at has a $5 min. bet). Keep an eye on the one out of three that hasn't hit yet. You may want to raise your bet on your two when the leftover one doesn't hit for awhile. The only way you lose in this, is if you do not choose the one column or dozen that gets spun. But by this time, you should already have your $ built up to allow a forfeiture. Your odds are better when you do this. I have seen this system fail. I've also seen it allow many people to win slowly and surely. How much time do you want to invest on winning?

As far as your further question, no bet is illegal. Your dealer will not allow a false bet. We are trained to look for bets that are illegally placed and will help you place them properly.

There are actually several flaws in your logic. First off most casinos have an upper and lower limit to a roulette table. So if you keep doubling your bet you will very soon hit the upper limit if the lower limit is $15. So if you lose three times in a row you are already at $180 on your system. Five times in a row and you are up to $720 just to win your money back with a slight profit. If the lower limit is $15, then the upper limit is probably less than $500. So if you hit a run of bad luck you are going to max out what you can bet. You are then going to have to win two big bets just to get back on track. Then you suggested that the odds were close to 50/50. But in reality the odds are 47/47 (rounded). The over 5.26% of the time the house edge, in this case the 0 and 00 kick in and make your venture even less profitable. So playing like this will yield two problems. One is the house edge, and the other is it only takes a run of 5 numbers that don't help you to really hurt you financially. If you were super rich, the upper table limit would get in the way, unless you play a high stakes table. But then you are having to bet a much higher lower amount, which would escalate into an outrageously bad bet if you lost three or four times in a row. Next time you go to a casino look at the tally board. It is not uncommon for the same color to hit four or five times in a row. That's when people trying your system go bust.

The answer to your question is no.

There is nothing wrong with your suggestion -- in fact it DOES make you a favorite to win money over the SHORT term -- except for the fact that you would need an "infinite" amount of money.

Lose 9 or 10 bets in a row -- and sooner or later this WILL happen -- and even if you had the $1024 or $2048 you needed you would run up against the "house limit" (which is one of the reasons they have one). Not to mention the fact that you no doubt have just lost everything you won playing "the system" the other times, and then some.

It's by no means illegal. In fact smart Casinos would welcome somebody doing this, doubling up can make the stakes rise pretty quick.

Note that this "system" is not news, it has been around for years. So have the Casinos.

Those 2 green numbers give the Casino a 5% edge, and in the long run you can't beat it.

the problem with this system is sooner or later if you keep losing you will hit the table maximum bet. Only play roulette if you have money to lose...if you want to win money play craps...it is by far the most exciting table game and by making some basic bets(pass-line, odds pass-line and buying numbers) you can really rack up some cash, especially if you get a hot shooter. Just stay away from hardway, proposition, and any one-roll bets. The casino advantage on these are huge and these are considered sucker bets. Again, play roulette only if you can afford to lose.

This is about the 20th time I've seen this question I'll give you a quick answer because ZCT will do it in detail later. No the system you refer to is the Martgdale system and doesn't work because in a casino we limit the amount of times you can double your bet to between 5 and 7 times.

There is no system to beat roulette the odds are just to great. Although I love to play Roulette I usually play the numbers sometimes I win, sometimes I lose it is fun and it is exciting. You would have better odds playing blackjack, craps or video poker. GOOD LUCK
