How can I get rid of lines in Microsoft Word?

Every time I press the Enter key a line appears. Why is this happening? And how can I stop it from generating more line when I press enter?

(1) Are you in the middle of a paragraph? Just keep typing. No need to press enter at the end of a line. (You knew that, I'm just being a jerk by saying so...)

(2) Check out Format --> Borders and Shading... and see what the current Borders and Shading applies to...

(3) Are you typing in the middle of a Table? (And don't know it, maybe?) Check out Table--> Table Properties --> Borders and Shading ...same diddling as step 2
