I don't know....

I've got an elderly pomeranian, about 14-15 years old, who is extremely lethargic today. No bloody stool or frequent urine attacks or vomiting, just lethargy for no apparent reason. He's not in pain, as far as I can tell. The only thing bothering me is that his stomach is swollen, but sort of bouncy (I guess it's gas). I'm afraid he might be dying or something, but it doesn't seem like a dog would just die. Could it be food-related? Yesterday and today he had ALPO Chophouse Ground Top Sirloin, but it's not in the lists...

I really don't want him to die...

He's not in any pain, and he's expelling some gas from both ends occasionally. It's just been today, too, before breakfast, so I don't think he's got torsion...

Also, he's still eating and drinking. He's perfectly normal except for being so lethargic...

Is your dog still eating? He may have something stuck in his intestine or something. Has he had any bones or toys that may have had a piece come off of and he swallowed. A good indication that he needs to go to the vet and soon is if he has stopped eating, or if he has vomitted, or if he hasn't had a bowel movement. However, these signs can take a day or two to start presenting so you should probably make an appointment for tomorrow and get him checked out. Better safe then sorry. Good luck.

It is probably 'just gas' but since your dog is 'lethargic' and isn't 'passing gas' from either end, I suggest that you turn of your computer NOW and take him to the vet IMMEDIATELY ... he could have a 'torsion' in his bowel and needs surgery, and the 'sooner the better' he gets a 'good diagnosis' and treatment, the better you chances are that he'll be 'good as new' when his treatement is over. If you 'can't afford it' then you should be prepared to have him 'put down' because he's SUFFERING ...

If he normally eats this food, it may have caused some intestinal bloating & they pass gas the same as humans do. If he does not normally eat this food and you just switched brands, this can be the cause. It produces lethargy, gas, and abdominal bloating. I did not hear of this being on the list, but watch for the next day or two. If you just switched brands, or just went to moist food then I would say it's the cause.

As you say, he is an old dog.

Alpo is one of the brands that is on recall, especially the wet foods. You may want to take your Pomeranian in for a check-up, just in case.

Good luck. And if it's just his time. Make sure he knows you love him.
