I think Jesus meant that you need to put others ahead of yourself, care for them, except them for who they are. Obviously you won't feel a strong love like you do for your family, but by treating them as you would like to be treated, you are showing them love.

Jesus doesn't tell us to do something that can't be done. It may sound difficult until you know what that means.
Love isn't necessarily a "feeling" or an emotion. It is action based on the true definition of love from Jesus' view point.
From God's or Jesus' view, love is patience, kindness, not being rude, not keeping a record of wrongs, doing what is best for the person even if it costs you something and treating them like you want to be treated. It never fails, Jesus says. Love is an action and has nothing to do with how those people behave. That's how Jesus can love everyone and pay your penalty for death even though you may or not even care if he did that and didn't even know about it. Love doesn't change because of how the person acts, but it keeps on being love.

I would say that in order to love those you do not know, you need to learn to feel sympathy and empathy. Realize that everyone is someone's family, every person is someone's child. And that each person's pain and joy can impact many more lives than just their own. Know that we are all a part of the human struggle...whether we choose to acknowledge it or not, we are all family.
Of course, I'm just a member of "western culture" so what do I know.

Only Jesus can give you unconditional love, a wonderful caring for humanity. This is not erotic love, but filial, as a brother and sister.
I love all of humankind of any race, and view everyone as a candidate for heaven. Have done missionary work in Mexico and the Tropics.
Is my love for God such that I would die for Jesus?--that question is presumptuous; remember, all the disciples said they would never forsake Him, then they ran. So, will face that test when it comes.
Blessings and AGAPE love, One-Way

If you have children you need to bring them up to understand that they should think of more than me, mine and myself. Your love for others might not be the same as for your family.
However, on holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, invite a person that does not have family to holiday dinner. You will likely find them in your church, at work etc. There are a lot of suicide attempts at that time of year because a lot of people are excluded from the warmth of the season.

Agape love, which is what Jesus is talking about there means to put the other person's welfare ahead of your own. It isn't sloppy sentiment.
Love, for a Christian is a verb, not a feeling. Doing good things for other people FOR GOD, not necessarily them is why we do what we do.

The love he is talking about here is not a feeling its a how you treat others.
We are told to love our enemies. It doesn't mean we have to like them or have tender feeling for them but we can be patient with them, kind to them, not envious of them, not arrogant toward them, not rude to them. We can be unselfish toward them, not be hot headed toward them, and not keep a list of wrongs they have done to us. We do not have to be happy if bad things happen to them but we can rejoice when good things do.
In the movie Fiddler on the roof Taviah and his wife are singing to each other the song "Do You Love Me?" and she lists all the things she does for him day after day and he persists to ask her but do you love me and finally she says if all the things I do for you isn't love what is? The point is love is what you do not what you feel.

Love is the only way...If you are born of God, you will love people with the love He has placed in your spirit. This is what separates you from the people who belong to Satan. If you cannot love your enemies then you have not the love of God in you but all you have to do is ask of God and He will love others through you when you have failed to do it on your own. This is the first Commandment which is to love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength and the second is to love your neighbour as much as you love yourself, do this and great will be your reward in heaven...

The love Jesus talked about isn't an emotion or feeling! The love Jesus talked about was different. It's compassion and devotion. It's like being willing to die for someone whether you like them or not. THE LOVE JESUS TALKED ABOUT IS DIFFERENT!

Ask Jesus, He says seek and you find and knock and the door will be opened. I can honestly say that I never loved anyone really until I prayed that He would make it possible for me to love them. Try that it worked for me.
