I am thinking about getting some chickens. Are the eggs any better for you then the eggs at the store? My family has always used "Egg Beaters" or something like that, because it is lower in cholesterol. But what about fresh, homegrown eggs?

You can make a VERY slight difference in colestrol (like less than 10%) by the chickens diet. IF you grow your owen feed you dont have to worry if the chicken farmer fed wheat gluten from china but if you buy it well then you worry about if the feed manufacturer did.

I was raised on a chicken farm. The more organic matter the chickens eat, the better the eggs are. If you supplement the commercial feed with vegi type table scraps, even better. If you can let them run around and eat bugs and grass, that is the best.

Either way, The fresher the better.

I buy a neighbors fresh eggs every time he comes around with them. Some people won't use them because they are not pasteurized. I think they have a much better flavor, they are richer in color. No low cholesterol eggs available that way though.
