If you paint it, it will look like painted paneling. I think it will look cheap and tacky. You can try it and see what you think - that's a cheap way to redecorate. But my bet is that you tear it down and drywall it.

Do you have drywall behind the paneling alreay? Take the cover off an outlet, and look at the hole to see what's behind the paneling. If there is alrea drywall, you may just have to fill the nail holes, and paint.

Rip it down. Otherwise it will look like painted wood paneling. You might not need to put up sheetrock if the wall behind it is flat. you would probably need to plaster it though.

ive painted paneling befor anf it turned out good you can even get fancy and paint the lines a color to go with the rest of the room. MY advice would to prime first i found out the hard way, lots of coats of paint to cover.

you could paint over it. but it would look nicest if you just tear that off and just use the sheetrock

It would be better to take it down , but then you will have to repair the wall. Try something easier and cheaper hang a bamboo shade over the wall then you can put you pictures up over the top. If you don't like the bamboo try an old lace tablecloth!
