It does sound weird because when I googled it, the thing I found implies that he should have died when he was a few days old if it wasn't diagnosed and treated at birth. See here http://www.savebabies.org/diseasedescriptions/msud.php

I think maybe the doctor has made a incorrect dianosis because this a genetic condition which is usually diagnosed in infancy. This condition needs immediate treatment and close blood monitoring. Please contact the doctor who made this diagnosis and ask them what they mean or if they can provide info on the condition.

Does he have it written down? Perhaps he misheard. You could search on some of the symptoms he told his doctor and see if you can find anything that sounds like that
