All people who acknowledge that they have sinned need to give evidence that they are actually sorry for their sins."Saying penance'is a way of indicating this repentance in confessing sin and acceptance of absolution with a firm intent of amendment of life in cooperation with the gift of God's grace.
Different orders of nuns have different rules of life. Some are active(religious sisters who teach schools or are nurses, pastoral associates, etc) and some are contemplative(dedicating themselves exclusively to prayer). There are different "families"of orders like Benedictine,Franciscan ,Dominican or Augustinian or later groups like Sisters of Mercy or Les Dames De Sacre Coeur.
Most groups have an observer time or postulancy a trial and training time(novitiate) and a time for temporary vows when the full life can be tried out before permanent commitment. There is a dedication to the "evangelical counsels" of celibate chastity, poverty or community of goods(holding possessions in common) and obedience to the teachings of Christ, the"charisms of the community."the particular rule, constitutions and bylaws of the community and to the legitimate authorities of the community

Nuns aren't any more perfect than laypeople, and the rules depend on the order they're following. Even Buddhists do a form of self-examination and work a form of "penance" but we call it "purification practices" which are simply to alleviate the stress of "guilt" from the mindstream in a set of activities which are more virtuous than the misdeed we committed.

If one will read the history, the name of nun actually extends before Roman Catholicism does. That was the name given to the women in the pagan temples that the priests would go to do acts that are obviously not Biblical, that I will not name. If one reads the word of God for themselves, they will find that much of what the Catholic church does and teach goes, directly against the word of the living God. Roman Catholicism was even created by Constantine when he desired to bring the pagans and the christians together, thus making a religious blend of christian and pagan ceremonies and traditions. Yet, "what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?" 2 Cor 6:14-16. Look for the story of sister Charlotte who became a nun at a young age in a convent, and you will see to some degree the horrors that lie deep within her walls.

Primarily you have to be catholic, female, and breathing. The more specific rules will depend on the order of nuns you join. Still, I believe most of them are desperate for novices (nuns in training), at least in the US.
Why you would want to give up your freedom, not to mention sex, for some christian cult is something you will have to answer for yourself. It makes no sense to me.

They haven't read the verse in the scripture concerning Jesus's last words, where He said, 'IT IS FINISHED', yet!!! They are STILL trying to WORK their way into Heaven! Sad, very sad, . .
Just do whatever the church, or in other words, the Pope, on down to the local priest of your parish tell you to do!

You have to be Catholic, virginal and look good in black and white. Oh... and it helps if you know the words to "The hills are alive with the sound of music."
