It is not the Guru's job to help people with materialistic possessions. It is also not his job to indulge in doing relief operations, and do the charity work. These things are done by the Govt. and NGOs and philanthropists.
Guru's job is to remove darkness from our hearts and enlighten it. It is the most difficult job to do in this world, and I and you can not understand it.
You are right in implying that if we get a Guru, he should be true and practical, as is prescribed by the Vedas.
A Guru should be knowledgeable of every scripture in this world, so that he can transfer all the knowledge to us and clear all our doubts. And even more importantly, he should be a person, who has come face to face with God, which means that he has the immense treasure of love with him.
Tell me how many are like him today?
But they are all flourishing because of our ignorance, and our adamant nature of not trying to understand the real thing. We sometimes have one Guru as show piece, to tell to the rest of the world that we are better than others.
It is better not to have a Guru, than to have a pseudo guru.

Honestly I believe in my sub-constious as my Guru. Believe in you intutions more than anybody else or the so called GURU's of these days who are mostly interested in the contribution collection business. I don't say that everybody is a cheat, but most of them are. Hence, I believe more in the clear, serere and divine thoughts that flows from mind and practice that what I feel is right.

The word "guru" has become generic, like "Kleenex" or "Xerox," these days. I assume you mean the kind of guru who is a leader for some spiritual search endeavor...and usually when the average person thinks of guru, he/she thinks of non-mainstream groups, cult or not.
During times of natural disasters like Katrina, and tragedies inflicted by man against man (say the World Trade Towers/9/11), we hear about Red Cross and a whole variety of other not for profit groups and religious organizations, who rush to aid all description of relief for days, weeks, months and years that follow. I never see anything about alternative groups or religions and the gurus who lead them. I can't say that they aren't quietly going about the business of helping, but it makes me wonder! Many of these groups demand 100% tithing to join. They build their empires but I never see them spread the wealth outside of their empires. I can't say that they don't. I just don't see or hear any evidence of it. So I tend to be very, very skeptical.

Guru is one who guides disciple. It is a personal thing as between members of a family.
Let this word 'guru' need not be used here. There are followers
of different religions in different robes who roam every where. It is the botheration of them and those who feed them. Why we should worry about it.

Hindu and Buddhist gurus are supposed to teach you to cultivate your OWN mind to deal appropriately with disasters, natural AND man-made... if you don't follow their guidance, then what good are they to you? Surely you don't expect them to show up and do some form of illogical magic tricks to please your sense of self-cherishment? That's not how Hinduism and Buddhism works. Oh, and to cover any claims that you think they should be out there rolling up there sleeves for relief work... many do, when physically able, so we'll nip that in the bud.
