No, it is physically impossible for any dog to have a "locking jaw". I can't believe people still think that they do. If anyone actually cared to look it up, they'd find the myth dispelled very quickly.

The bully breeds beat out other breeds such as golden retrievers and cocker spaniels.
Stop the hate.

Pit bulls' jaws DO NOT LOCK! Why is this myth still around?? If people would actually read about this breed that seems so controversial we wouldn't be having issues with banning certain breeds or ignorant "knowing" comments like this. If you're going to have a strong opinion at least do your research.
Sorry to rant...

pitbulls dogs do not "lock" a dogs jaw is made so that it actually does not have the capability of locking. But a pittbulls jaw strength is absolutley amazing.
Example: My pitty loves his rope toy. my husband will pull the rope toy in circles while my pitty is attached until eventually it has lifted my pitty 1-2 feet off the ground and he will stay suspended there by his jaws on the rope until my hubby puts him down. Pittys and rottys are the only dogs I know of who have that strength of jaw.
Of course the story above is exactly the kind of thing that perpetuates the "lock jaw" myth, but its just jaw strength.

Pit bulls' jaws are no different in design than any other dog, therefore any claims that they do not let go, or have more pressure per square inch than any other dog is fallacy.

No. Strong jaws - yes. I mean, look at them. My experience with dogs is that most of them have VERY strong jaws. I can pick up my parents' Aussie mix by her tug-of-war rope - and considering the fact that Aussies weren't bred to bite and hang on (that would be counterproductive to herding), that's strong jaws.

It's not a belief, it's fact- pit bulls, and other brachycephaletic breeds of dog (bulldogs, bull mastiffs, etc.) have a specially-designed jaw that, once it clamps down on something, stays locked. My English bulldog will play tug-of-war with us, and he will clamp his jaws down on the rope toy so hard that we can actually pick him up off the ground by raising the rope toy up, and he still won't let up. It's because they were originally bred to bait bulls by grabbing onto their noses.

No, I don't believe that pitbull's have locking jaws. Pitbull's just have very strong jaw and neck muscles, so thier bite can't be easily broken.
