About 320 RAW files (12.4 MB each) or 830 best quality jpg files (roughly 4.8 MB each).

The way to calculate the number of pictures it can take with the size of card is as follow:

Take a 4 GB card. If you have a 6 MB camera (say Nikon D50) with highest setting, each jpg picture is about 2.5 MB. So a 4 GB or 4000 MB card can take 4000/2.5 = 1600 pictures. If you take RAW, it is about 6 MB per picture. So 4000/6 = 667 pictures. So the number of pictures it can take depends on the camera size, the type and setting of pictures. Knowing how to calculate, you can figure out yourself.

the number of photos that you can store on a memory card depends on the selected image quality (amount of compression) - see page 138 of the owners manual:
http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=14051&p_created=1155304597&p_sid=dpyCS_zi&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD00JnBfcHJvZHM9MTksMzA5JnBfY2F0cz0xODcmcF9wdj0yLjMwOSZwX2N2PTEuMTg3JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=&p_topview=1

On the highest setting of NEF + JPEG fine, you would get approximate 216 photos, and at the lowest setting of JPEG basic, 6000 photos.
