Diverticulitis is when the intestine forms little pouches. Food as it travels through the intestine gets stuck in the pouches, so the pouches become inflamed and the person can be in agony, even get a infection. If the process continues you risk perforating the intestine allowing bacteria to leak out into the abdomen, then surgery is needed. As to the reason for the pouches, some say constipation, some say not have a balanced diet, some say genetic?

I have a sister & aunt who have experienced this. My aunt did not make necessary changes to her diet, therfore wound up having surgery, part of her intestine removed as a result. My sister on the other hand has been very cautious with what she eats & has not had that severe of a problem. she has occasional flare ups with it but never hospitalised over it. It's nothing to take lightly at all, a lifestyle change for sure.
