It is appalling to me that you are only good because you think god exists. No wonder the world is in such poor shape. Please explain

It's actually a pretty common Christian response.

I am a Christian and I have never heard anyone say that. We don't get to heaven by being good. We have just as much reason to be good since God exists as we would have if he didn't. I'm sure the world isn't in poor shape because Christians are good or not good.

Goodness is what it is because of who God is. Goodness itself is defined by God's character. If there was no God, there would be no good.
However, this is really a futile discussion because, if God did not exist, then nothing would exist. Even the phrase "if God does not exists" is itself a logical impossibility apart from God's existence since the meaning of the very words of the phrase find meaning in their relationship to God and the world which he has created and sustains.

I don't know why they would. Common sense says we need to be good most of the time atleast in order to have a good relationships with others. Society is the reason to be good. God doesn't require goodness even, just faith.

people have a natural sense of right and wrong and implied is a natural sense of morality ... christians dont have a monopoly on goodness ... just the truth ...

You can take one person's statement and try to blanket us all with it, but that is not very smart. We are all individuals, let's try not to forget that. :)
